About This Position
The Waterfront Director supervises the waterfront staff and all aspects of Wildwood’s waterfront program including swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and recreational water activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise waterfront staff
  • Verify skills of staff prior to allowing them to assume waterfront duties
  • Train waterfront staff and non-waterfront staff in waterfront emergency procedures
  • Conduct periodic in-service trainings and rescue drills
  • Provide constructive feedback to waterfront staff, including periodic written evaluations
  • Deliver and supervise high-quality waterfront programs
  • Maintain an organized and safe facility and keep accurate written records
  • Assess swimming ability of each camper and staff member prior to their use of waterfront
  • Enforce all waterfront rules and policies
  • Act as a full participant in the Wildwood CommunityAll Wildwood staff will be required to help work in the kitchen at least 2 days over the summer

Complete evening security duties as assigned
Perform other duties as assigned
Substitute as cabin counselor if needed

Qualifications

Required qualifications as per New Hampshire Department of Health & Human Services regulations, American Camp Association standards and Mass Audubon Policy:

  • Must be 21+
  • Must have prior experience managing a swim or boating program
  • Must hold current and valid First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding Certifications
  • Participate in mandated, paid camp training and utilize learning including: natural history, communication, group management, health and safety, and teaching techniques
  • Be willing to work in all weather conditions including: heat, sun, humidity and rain
  • Physically access sanctuary terrain easily by foot
  • Ability to effectively interact with others in camp’s youth-centered environment
  • Ability to adapt to changes in schedule and work assignment
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
  • Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Apply limited manual dexterity in combination with hand/eye coordination to manipulate outdoor equipment
  • Must be willing and able to use: lifeguard tube, throw rope, rescue hook, motor boat, cleaning supplies, rakes, hand tools

Desired Qualifications

  • Have prior management experience
  • Have experience working in nature-based learning environments
  • Is studying or holds a degree in a field related to conservation or environmental education
  • Familiarity with regional natural history, wildlife conservation, or other applicable natural history topics
  • Valid driver’s license

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s base salary begins at $540/week; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. Compensation includes housing and meals for the duration of employment. This is not a benefits eligible position.

June 7-August 28, 2023

All Mass Audubon Camp Staff undergo mandatory training prior to interacting with campers. Training includes: Natural History, Lesson Planning, Behavior Management, Games, and so much more.
