*Summary:
*

To serve in a per diem support role for the Department of Corrections, providing varied security support services within a correctional facility to ensure safety and security. This non-certified correctional line personnel role will follow established safety and security rules and regulations and receive on-the-job training under the immediate supervision of qualified supervisors and certified correctional employees.

*Responsibilities:
*

· Operates monitor screens or electronic surveillance boards and remains alert to issues that indicate the presence of unauthorized persons in the restricted area; observes resident inmate behavior to preclude escape or violent incidents, assuring public and institutional safety.

· Provides support to correctional staff in ensuring institutional safety and order; listens for unusual sounds to detect facility issues, breakage of glass, tampering of locks or windows, and so forth, and alerts officers of such.

· Monitors and screens the entrance and departures of personnel, visitors, and resident inmates within a secure correctional facility based on established procedures and by enforcing access control policies. Checks and monitors mechanical/automatic doors, cameras, and security equipment and reports discrepancies in a timely manner or issues to the supervisor.

· Examines credentials such as personnel identification, badges, and passes at assigned entry and exit points to prevent unauthorized persons or security issues; maintains permanent visitor records or sign-in sheets as necessary.

· Staffs a main reception, pod, or designated area; receives calls coming into the switchboard or via two-way radio and routes required messages. Answers questions, provides information, assists as a controller/dispatcher to communicate medical or security-related information, and directs emergency or incident response units as needed.

· Utilizes electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units to maintain daily activity logs, provides clerical support, and observes and completes checklists or reports, as specified, for administrative support purposes; alerts the supervisor of any concerns or issues.

· Judges the severity of situations observed during monitoring/surveillance and obtains assistance by using a radio or telephone to contact an officer, supervisor, or emergency medical personnel, following established procedures and protocols.

· Performs work activities within the facility that require frequent reaching, bending, lifting, walking, or running and applying visual, manual dexterity, wiring, verbal, and auditory abilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

*EDUCATION: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

EXPERIENCE: No previous work experience required. Preferred experience in the areas of corrections, law enforcement, social services, or the military.

License/Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

2. Must always remain alert and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

3. Candidate must be able to pass drug screening.

4. After conditional offers of appointment have been made, prospective appointees must pass a comprehensive medical examination provided at state expense.
*5. Candidates receiving conditional offers of employment must pass a criminal background and reference checks; those who do not have good character, or a conviction free record of serious criminal and sexual misconduct offenses will be ineligible for appointment.
